Speech therapy addresses how a child produces sounds and words, how well they understand language, and how they use language to express themselves and interact with others. It helps late talkers, children with specific speech sound errors, and children who struggle with conversation.
Because speech, behaviour and sensory needs often overlap, our speech goals are coordinated with your child's ABA and occupational therapy goals, so your child hears the same approach in every session.
How we approach speech therapy
- We assess receptive and expressive language separately, since a child can be strong in one and behind in the other.
- Sessions blend structured practice with genuine play-based communication opportunities.
- For minimally verbal children, we introduce augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) tools where appropriate.
- Speech goals are coordinated with your child's ABA and occupational therapy goals for consistency across sessions.
- Parents get simple activities to practise at home between sessions.
Who speech therapy helps
- Toddlers and children who are late to talk
- Children whose speech is hard for others to understand
- Nonverbal or minimally verbal children
- Children who understand words but struggle to hold a conversation
How it works

Common questions
Yes. Therapy for nonverbal or minimally verbal children often focuses on building functional communication first, through gestures, picture systems or AAC devices, alongside continued spoken language work.
If your child is not using words by around 18 months to 2 years, is hard to understand, or does not respond to their name or to simple instructions, a speech and language assessment is a sensible step.
Yes, and it works well. ABA builds learning and behaviour skills while speech therapy targets language. We coordinate the two.
It depends on your child's starting point and goals. We review progress regularly and tell you honestly what we are seeing.
