What is ABA therapy?
Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is a structured, evidence-based approach that teaches useful skills and reduces barriers to learning by understanding how behaviour works. Therapy is built around each child's strengths, uses positive reinforcement and tracks data at every session.
Why ABA therapy is important for children with autism
- Builds communication: from making requests to using words or other ways to communicate.
- Teaches daily living skills: toileting, dressing, eating and self-care, in small achievable steps.
- Supports social skills: turn-taking, play, joint attention and interacting with peers.
- Reduces challenging behaviour: by understanding why it happens and teaching a better alternative.
- Measurable progress: data shows what is working and when to adjust the plan.
How ABA can help children with ADHD
ADHD is managed differently from autism, and ABA is not a standalone treatment for it. But the behavioural strategies at the heart of ABA are useful for many children with ADHD:
- Clear routines and visual schedules that make daily tasks predictable
- Reinforcement for staying on task and finishing activities
- Breaking tasks into small steps to reduce overwhelm
- Teaching waiting, self-regulation and impulse control through practice
- Parent coaching so strategies carry over at home and school
A clinical assessment should always guide which supports your child needs.

Common questions
ABA is one of the most widely used evidence-based approaches for autism. It breaks skills like communication, play, self-care and social interaction into small steps, uses positive reinforcement, and tracks data so progress is measurable and the plan can be adjusted.
ADHD is treated differently from autism, and ABA is not a standalone treatment for it. However, ABA-based behaviour strategies, such as clear routines, reinforcement for focus and task completion, and parent training, can help children with attention, impulsivity and daily routines. A clinical assessment should guide the plan.
Look for a centre with a proper assessment, individualised goals, trained and supervised therapists, regular data-based progress reviews and parent involvement. Visiting in person and choosing a location you can reach consistently also matters, since regular attendance drives results.
Earlier is generally better, because young children learn rapidly, but ABA can help children of many ages. If you have concerns about your child's development, an assessment is the best first step.
